Top Questions To Ask At A Job Interview

Joe McDermott | Job Interview Advice
As interviewers, we pay particular attention to the questions that the candidate asks us during the interview. Our experience shows this can sometimes say more about their interests and intentions than the answers they have given to our questions.

For example if there are no questions being asked, we have to consider how interested this person is in the role. Are they here just for some interview practice or because an agency has encouraged them to come along.

Either way we would probably not offer this candidate the role.

An ideal candidate is one who asks intelligent, job related questions throughout the interview. They involve us in a discussion and come across as genuinely interested in the role and in the organisation.

A candidate can ask questions at any stage throughout the interview. This will not only demonstrate interest but will allow them to gather information vital to helping decide if the job is right for them.

Sample Questions to Ask in an Interview

Here are some questions that always show me that that a candidate is serious about the role:

1. Can you tell me about the direction the organisation is taking?
2. What are your growth targets for next year?
3. Do you have any new products you are expecting to launch next year?
4. What is going really well for you at the moment? What is not going well?
5. What do you see as the main challenges you face over the coming period?
6. What do you envisage as the ideal solution to these challenges?
7. What are your goals and what can I do to contribute towards achieving them?
8. How would you describe the culture of the company?

All of these questions show that the interviewee is interested in my company, wants to learn more and above all wants to know how secure the organisation is. These all suggest to me that the candidate is thinking about their own needs now and in the future and asking whether my company can meet those needs.
